PMG press release by: Emily Riden
Laurie and Timmy Sharma were apparel shopping when they noticed that neon-colored garments were popping up throughout stores. Tops, jeans and accessories, all in vibrant, eye-catching colors were flying off of shelves everywhere – everywhere that is except tack shops.
The owners of the brands TuffRider and Equine Couture recognized an opportunity to bring the popular neon trend from the mainstream to the equestrian market, and the TuffRider Neon Collection was born.
“What makes TuffRider and Equine Couture different than the majority of equestrian brands is our ability to create our own fabrics. We’re not reliant on buying pre-existing fabrics,” explained Timmy, who founded the TuffRider brand in the early 90s. “Because of that, we’re able to quickly recognize trends like this one and turn them into something that is both fashionable and practical for riding.”
Inspired by the popularity of neon jeans in particular, the TufffRider team went to the drawing board. Before a single pair of breeches was created, the team reviewed numerous color and material options until they arrived upon the perfect combination for the first TuffRider neon breeches: a polyester, cotton and spandex blend to be created in neon pink, blue, yellow, peach and green. With the addition of a water-repellent component to the fabric, the creation of a grippy silicone knee patch and the testing of several prototypes, the TuffRider Ladies Neon Knee Patch Breeches were ready to hit the market.
But a collection is not made on one product. It’s up to Laurie Sharma, the founder of Equine Couture and the creative designer behind the brand’s products, to envision the full line and develop products that fit cohesively together.
With that in mind, TuffRider created the Ladies Neon Ventilated Mock Zip Short and Long Sleeve Polo Shirts. With a charcoal base, the micro-polyester shirts are accented with the same exact colors as are available in the Ladies Neon Knee Patch Breeches, making them ideal for pairing.
The pairing options continue throughout the line with the introduction of the Marathon Tights, the Ladies Neon Tammy Jacket and even TuffRider Neon All Purpose Saddle Pads and TuffRider Fleece Polo Bandages all in the same shades.
“We’re fortunate to have the capabilities to create our own fabrics and to easily test new ideas or materials in limited quantities before we bring them to market at a larger scale,” Laurie said. “This really allows us to make high-quality products and to be extremely innovative. Every season we try to bring something new to equestrian fashion that’s not like anything that has been done before.”
