“If you were to travel on Highway 287, just north of Three Forks, Montana, you would see a herd of blue roans on the hillside. These are called the ‘Bleu Horses’ and were a project of a local rancher, I believe. I took a road trip with my son today and, since I wasn’t pulling a trailer, I had time to stop and look at these.”- Debbie Jeppesen
Thanks to Debbie Jeppesen for sharing these beautiful photos with us. We did a little research and discovered that the 39 horse sculptures were created by metal sculptor named Jim Dolan. There are 39 horses in total, and they are arranged in groupings making them look as natural as a herd of wild horses, except that they are in fact eight feet tall from the shoulder. The heads rest of ball bearings so they move.
Over the past 40 years, Jim has created over 170 public pieces of artwork, including many depicting western wildlife and a golden eagle in Osaka, Japan with a 36 foot wingspan.
