Drew and Brooke with Cuz Shes Worth It

By: Brittany Bevis

It has always been a long-term goal of trainer, Drew DeBuhr, and girlfriend, Brooke Granzow, to move back home to Iowa. Now, after five years spent at Richland Ranch, that goal is being realized as Drew’s training operation will return to northern Iowa in December 2021.

Drew grew up in Iowa showing POA ponies alongside his brothers before making the switch to the Quarter Horse industry. After high school, he moved to Pilot Point, TX. to work as an assistant trainer for Rusty Green Show Horses. Following his time spent in Texas, Drew moved back home to work for Richard and Debra Donnelly to build a small group of personal clientele. That eventually led him to the Des Moines area in 2015, where he worked as an assistant for Patrick Heeley Pleasure Horses.

Drew and Zippos Mr Goodbar

Since 2017, Drew has worked out of Richland Ranch in Auburn, IL. After his time spent crisscrossing the country, Drew is eagerly looking forward to moving back home to Iowa to be closer to family and to build his business. Drew’s girlfriend, Brooke, who’s also an Iowa native, will continue to compete as an amateur.

“I very much enjoyed working with Drew these last few years,” says John Boxell of Richland Ranch. “We’ve become great friends. I wish him nothing but the best. I think he’s a great talent and works hard at his craft. I think the world of him, and I’m going to miss him a great deal. His being here inspired me to ride harder and to be a better horse trainer. Best of luck to him and Brooke in the future.”

Karen Boxell expresses similar sentiments. “Drew and Brooke will be deeply missed here at Richland Ranch,” she says. “We have a small group of employees that have become more like family to me than co-workers. We will continue to send the coming two-year-olds to Drew as we start our search for a new trainer at Richland Ranch. Best of luck on your new endeavor, and I miss you already.”

At Richland Ranch, Drew was able to show numerous successful futurity horses, like Mr Zippos Good Bar, to wins at the Tom Powers, NSBA World Show, and Congress in 2-Year-Old Western Pleasure. “Peterbilt” now stands at Richland Ranch.

“I’m forever grateful for the opportunity to work out of the legendary facility at Richland Ranch and to gather industry contacts and support,” Drew says. “At Richland Ranch, I was able to build relationships with some of the industry’s best- John Boxell, as a professional horseman, and Karen Boxell, as a breeding manager. I’m forever grateful for the knowledge and support that John has been able to give me, as a developing horse trainer, both in and out of the show pen. Owners of Richland Ranch, John and Sondra Narmont, have been nothing but supportive of me and my career goals and passion.”

John and Sondra feel blessed to have had the opportunity to work with this talented young trainer. “He has made our dreams come true with the success of Mr Zippos Good Bar. We look forward to seeing how Drew does with Peterbilt’s first foal crop that are turning two. I’m not good with goodbyes, and we’re all sad to see both Brooke and Drew leave, but we wish them the best of luck in this new chapter of their lives.”

Beginning in December 1, 2021, Drew DeBuhr Show Horses will be located in northern Iowa. The operation will continue to specialize in Western Pleasure futurity and maturity horses. “I’m excited to continue to progress my clients’ goals and will be open to accepting new clientele of all levels,” Drew says.

We wish this young couple the best of luck in their new endeavor.
