Double Early Birthday Present For Kaylee Hamm With Wins in 2-Year-Old Geldings and 3-Year-Old Mares

Kaylee Hamm received the best birthday present a girl could ever ask for today with a double win in 2-Year-Old Geldings and 3-Year-Old Mares at the 2014 AQHYA World Show. Hamm doesn’t turn 14 until tomorrow, but she certainly didn’t mind opening a few golden gifts early…

First in the pen this morning, Hamm showed Be A Gunslinger, aka “Randy,” to a unanimous win in 2-Year-Old Geldings. Then, she came right back in the pen to win another World Championship title with Giancarla in 3-Year-Old Mares. One more quick change later and she was back in the arena again with Best To Be Me in Aged Mares, where Hamm received fourth place. It’s been a busy day, to say the least.

“I’ve never had three classes back-to-back before,” Hamm says. “In the first class, I went in second. In the second class, I went in first. In the third class, I went in around 16th. We have three helpers and one person would go get a horse and come back up [to the pen]. My grandma would have a jacket, and my sister would have the hat and water for me. We would change really quick.”

Basically, it’s been a marathon show day for the young competitor. We calculated that Hamm has been in the show pen for the past three hours straight. “I’m very tired and my back hurts, but I’m not complaining!” she says. “I’m very blessed.”

“I love showing all of them. Randy is very sweet. As a yearling, he was a little crazy, but he’s matured out. Carla is the sweetest horse I could ever imagine; she can even be a little over dramatic about it sometimes. She likes to cuddle. She will put her face up to your face and make you kiss her. She also likes Gatorade. Pretty much, after every horse show, she gets a treat or an orange Gatorade.”

Hamm’s last horse of the day was Best To Be Me, aka “Annie.” Despite some tough competition, the pair achieved a fourth place finish in the class of 19 entries.

“I had big competition in the Aged Mares class, but I worked so hard,” she says. “I’m proud of her whether she was first or last.”

Because Hamm’s horses will head home tomorrow, she chose to celebrate her birthday a day early. In addition to her two golden globes, she also received two pairs of shoes, a purse, some jewelry, and a piece of all important birthday cake!
