Darcie Winiewicz and her horse A Krymsun Legacy are one busy team this morning at the 2014 APHA World Championship Show. They just won their first ever World Championship title in Novice Amateur Trail, and they’re already headed back into the pen to compete in the Classic Amateur Trail. Thankfully, this pair drew the last spot in the working order, so they’ll have a bit of time to celebrate, compose, and create a strategy for a slightly different pattern.

Winiewicz and her 8-year-old gelding named “Dudley” have been a team for the past year and a half and currently compete under the guidance of Carly Veldman Parks and Wade Parks. This is her first trip to an APHA World Show, and she is thrilled that her dream of becoming a World Champion titleholder has finally come true.

“You start off showing as a kid, and you hear about people winning their World titles,” she says. “I always dreamed of it myself. You always picture your name being called, in your head, but there are some 30 other horses and riders with the same dream. You hope your best will be good enough, but obviously somebody else’s best might be a little better, so you don’t want to have that in your head.”

Prior to coming to Fort Worth, Winiewicz and Dudley were sitting in the #1 spot on the APHA year-end point leaderboard in Novice Amateur Trail. Because she will point out this year and move up into the next division in 2015, she wanted to make this last World Show Novice ride count.

“It’s always hard for me to determine [how well I did],” she says. “I thought I did well, but I’m always very hard on myself. This is my first World Show, and this is my first year doing Trail. I thought I had good rate, but I would’ve liked to have been a little fancier, I thought. But Carly said I was perfectly fancy and fine! I’m always trying to make Carly proud, because she is really good in Trail. She is a hard one to go behind. When she says ‘good job,’ it means you did great.”

Winiewicz and Dudley also compete in classes like Showmanship, Equitation, Horsemanship, and Western Pleasure, in addition to Trail. Next year, they hope to add Western Riding to their repertoire.
