Colonels Smart Spook and Larson: NRHA Open World Championship Shootout Champions

NRHA press release by Christa Morris – Oklahoma City, Oklahoma – December 7, 2013 – The $75,000-added National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Open World Championship Shootout brought some of the best reining horses in the world to the NRHA Futurity & Adequan® North American Affiliate Championship (NAAC) Show in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on Thursday, December 5.

Entries included the earners of more than $1.7 million, plus 2013 NRHA Open World Championship contenders (Nu Chexomatic, Whizasunnysailor BB and Colonels Shining Gun), a past NRHA Derby Open Champion (Tinker With Guns), past Shootout Champions (Tinker With Guns and Shiners Chic (co-champion)) and past NRHA European Futurity Level 3 Open Champion (Whizasunnysailor BB).

After a thrilling performance stacked full of high scores, the Shootout ended with a top score of 224.5, turned in by Colonels Smart Spook (Smart Spook x Colonels Cattin Gun) and NRHA Million Dollar Rider Jordan Larson (Whitesboro, Texas). Sally Amabile’s stallion earned a check for $20,850 to add to his current $24,000 in NRHA Lifetime Earnings. Larson and Colonels Smart Spook won the 2012 Darling 888 Ranch Open Derby and was a 2012 NRHA Derby finalist.

Two entries marked a 224 to tie for the reserve championship:

Custom Cash Advance (Custom Crome x Cash In Roan), ridden by Larson, owned by Luga, LLC, $188,500 NRHA LTE

Smoking Whiz (Topsail Whiz x Glendas A Smokingun), ridden by NRHA Million Dollar Rider Andrea Fappani (Scottsdale, Ariz.), owned by Silver Spurs Equine (Cave Creek, Ariz.)

Custom Cash Advance and Smoking Whiz won $13,760 Shootout check.

With the Shootout in the books, unofficially, Nu Chexomatic, owned by Jac Point QH and shown by Cody Sapergia, is the 2013 NRHA Open World Champion.

Approximately 1,400 horses and more than 120,000 visitors come from nearly 20 countries to compete and watch the excitement unfold.
