For 13-year-old Caroline Nielson of Las Vegas, Nevada, her win in 13 and under Trail marked a special occasion. Although she has previous World titles in the walk-trot division, and a Reserve Championship in Novice Youth 13 and under Trail from 2013, today’s win is her first World Championship in the regular 13 and under division.
Caroline has been showing “Bambi” for about one year, after she took over riding duties from big sister, Alysia.
“It feels really good,” Caroline says. “It’s exciting because I’ve gotten some World titles before, but they’ve been in Novice. I thought we had a really good pattern. She was a little itchy in the beginning, because there were some flies, but she got over it and the rest was really good.”
“In the beginning, I was scared for the X box lope-overs, but when I practiced them, we did them well. They were fun. The most challenging part was the very first lope-overs. They were kind of long, and she has short stubby legs, so that was hard!”
Trail is one of Caroline’s favorite classes. Coming up later today, she and Bambi will try their best in 13 and Under Horsemanship. Then, they will compete in western pleasure tomorrow.
Before Caroline entered the pen for trail this afternoon, she sought out some advice from her horse trainers, Tim and Karen Wildes.
“I needed to get all my spots and trust my horse, because she can do it!”
