Focusing on the future means channeling both mental and physical energy into long-term goals. For those in the horse industry, especially with an eye on futurities, it’s about developing young talent and pushing them to excel in one discipline while preparing them for success in another. You don’t aim for average, you strive to be the best.

For Amateur rider Brooke Granzow DeBuhr, her intense focus on futurity rides is driven by her vision for the horses she breeds, raises, and trains with her husband, professional trainer Drew DeBuhr. “I want to be part of the process,” says Brooke, “and you want all your horses to have value.”

This passion comes naturally to Brooke who grew up in a horse-loving family in Iowa. Her step-great-grandmother, Susan Knapp, introduced her to horses at the age of eight. From that moment, Brooke was hooked. “I was a barn rat from the start,” she recalls. “Whenever my parents would go out of town, I’d always want to stay at the barn.”

It probably helps considering how Brooke was raised.

Brooke had her own Miniature Horses (Sporty and Angel) that she rode and messed around with, riding around at the barn and even choosing to spend her overnights with the Knapps so she could spend more time with the horses.

She recalls, “Whenever my parents would go out of town, they’d ask where we wanted to stay. I’d always answer, ‘at the barn.’ I just loved it from the very beginning.”
