No. 7 TCU Takes Down No. 8 SDSU

SPRINGTOWN, Texas – The No. 7 TCU Horned Frogs equestrian squad defeated No. 8 South Dakota State, 12-7, on a wintery Thursday at Turning Point Ranch.  The Frogs have now won four of their five meets in the spring season.

The Rundown

TCU (6-6) went back and forth with the Jackrabbits in Equitation over Fences, finishing with a 3-2 advantage. Alex Beneson, Jayme Omand and Raegan Rast each earned their point for the Frogs, with Omand earning the MOP. Omand toppled SDSU’s Jacey Chorlton, 82-74, on Mabel for the win and her first Fences MOP of the season.

In Reining, SDSU took the discipline with a 3-2 decision. Adrianna Adams and Elena Hurd won their respective points, with Hurd earning the MOP. Her 68.5-65 decision on Reno over the Jackrabbits’ Mariah Wright earned her a third MOP for her sophomore season.

On the Flat, the Frogs overtook SDSU 3-1. Carley Barnett, Alex Beneson and Jayme Omand earned their points, with Barnett earning her third MOP this season for Flat with a score of 80 on Charon. It seemed Emelie Burgess would also win her point, but came to a draw with SDSU’s Claire Garduno, 74-74.

In Horsemanship, the Frogs rode strong against the Jackrabbits, nearly sweeping the discipline with a 4-1 decision. Laska Anderson, Elizabeth Bohn, Marah Huston and Jamie Cook all defeated their competitors in good fashion. Huston earned herself the MOP with a 72-68 decision against SDSU’s Jordan Gates.

The Frogs will finish out the regular season when they host SMU at Turning Point Ranch for Senior Day on March 9. TCU will then host the Big 12 Championships on March 30-31.

No. 5 SMU Storms Past No. 10 UT Martin, 15-3

DALLAS (SMU) – The No. 5 SMU equestrian team dropped No. 10 UT Martin, 15-3, Friday at the Dallas Equestrian Center.

The Mustangs (7-2, 4-0 UEC) quickly took a 4-1 lead after the day’s first event, Equitation on the Flat. Mary Elizabeth Cordia defeated Monika Zoromski, 80-66, before Vivian Yowan toppled Quinn Reed, 80-0. Nora Gray downed Randi LaChance, 90-79, to earn MOP honors, before Kirsten Ostling closed the event with a 68-67 edge over Abbie Hopkins.

In Horsemanship, SMU extended its lead to 6-3 over the Skyhawks (2-5, 2-2 UEC). Haylee Schoonover notched a 74-71.5 victory over Lucie Lundquist to earn MOP honors. Charlotte Selby scored a 72.5 to best Lucy Eier’s 69.5.

SMU secured the victory following a dominant 4-0 showing in reining. Jill Pfisthner tallied the first point for SMU with a 71-70.5 victory over Maddy Williams. Holly Lansidel downed Noel Meadows, 68-67, before Keagan Snively posted a 72 to knock off Liana Nowak, 72-69.5, and win the MOP. Madison Steed closed the event with a 73-70 win again Hannah McDonald.

The Mustangs concluded the meet with a 5-0 sweep in Equitation Over Fences. Alexandra Murphy tallied the first point for SMU with a 76-0 victory over Grace Rogers. Gray bettered Lindsay Anderson, 84-75, before Hayley Banas posted an 83-79 win. Brett Burlington posted a 77-73 win over Hopkins, before Yowan earned MOP honors with an 85-80 victory over Zoromski.

SMU returns to action tomorrow at 10 a.m. with a matchup against South Dakota State. The Mustangs will honor its seven seniors prior to the event.

 

SDSU Equestrian Topped by UT-Martin

DALLAS, Texas – The No. 8 South Dakota State equestrian team was topped by No. 10 UT-Martin, 10-6 Saturday at the Dallas Equestrian Center.

SDSU falls to 3-5 on the season, while UTM improves to 3-5.

In Equitation over Fences, the Jacks and the Skyhawks split the discipline, 2-2. Jacey Chorlton topped Monika Zoromski, 70-69 and Jessica Martinez defeated Randi LaChance, 79-78.

Miranda Sullivan upended Hannah McDonald, 69.5-68 in Reining to take the lead. Mariah Wright also won her point with a 70. Jordan Gates captured the final point of the discipline with a 71.5-70 victory over Maddy Williams.

Claire Garduno scored the only point of the second half with a 72-69 victory over Abbie Hopkins in Equitation on the Flat.

UTM swept Horsemanship, 4-0.

No. 5 SMU Blows Past South Dakota State For Senior Day Win

DALLAS (SMU) – The No. 5 SMU equestrian team honored its seniors with a 15-5 victory after winning all four disciplines against South Dakota State Saturday at the Dallas Equestrian Center.

With the victory, SMU improved to 8-2 on the season and finished the conference slate undefeated at 5-0. The Mustangs have secured the No. 1-seed in the United Equestrian Conference tournament, which will be hosted by SMU on March 30 and 31.

SMU opened the day with a 3-2 win in Equitation on the Flat. Kirsten Ostling opened the day with a 73-52 win over Claire Garduno, before Haley Zimmerman knocked off Taylor Duerr, 81-79. Mary Elizabeth Cordia closed the event with a 78-71 win over Sydney House.

The Mustangs took an 8-2 lead after sweeping Equitation Over Fences, 5-0. Senior Hayley Banas posted an MOP-winning 86 to better Jessica Martinez, 86-81. Nora Gray followed Banas’ lead with an 84-86 rout of Garduno, before Alexandra Murphy topped Lacey Chorlton 83-65. Vivian Yowan beat Taylor Duerr, 82-70, before Brett Burlington downed House, 77-74.

In the western arena, the Mustangs won Horsemanship, 3-2. Kara Vickery opened scoring with a 73-71.5 win over Mariah Wright, before Michaela Dinger posted a 75 to down Whitney Vesey, 75-55.5. Ashley Mauney closed the event and secured the victory for the Mustangs by scoring a program-best western score, 76.5, to claim the horsemanship MOP and down Nichole Zazula, 76.5-74.

The ponies closed out the day with a 4-1 win in reining. Olivia Pakula opened scoring with an MOP-winning 73-71 win against Miranda Sullivan, before Keagan Snively rode to a 67.5-66 win over Mariah Wright. Holly Lansidel topped Madison Sullivan, 71-68, before Madison Steed closed out the competition with a 72.0-70.5 win over Jordan Gates.

SMU goes on an SEC tour, visiting Georgia on March 2, before going to Auburn on March 3.

Cowgirls Stay Perfect in Big 12 Play

FORT WORTH, TEXAS – The No. 4 Oklahoma State Cowgirl equestrian team got its ninth-straight win against No. 7 TCU, 10-9, at Turning Point Ranch.

Down 7-5 with Horsemanship and Equitation on the Flat remaining, the Cowgirls (6-3, 3-0) rattled off five straight points to seal the win. Two of the points came in Horsemanship and the other three came in Equitation on the Flat.

The Cowgirls took Equitation on the Flat, 3-2, with the meet-sealing point coming from Katie Jones with her 79-58 victory. Maggie Drysch and Hannah Janson earned the other two points in the event for OSU.

The Cowgirls also took Horsemanship, 3-2. Libby Collins, Harley Huff and Sarah Miller got the points for the Cowgirls. Huff received her team-high sixth MOP honor with her 75-66 win over TCU’s Marah Huston.

The two teams tied in Reining, 2-2. Ebba Lange and Hannah Mitchell took home the two points for the Cowgirls. Mitchell earned MOP honors for the second-straight meet with her 72-71.5 win against TCU’s Elena Hurd.

Equitation Over Fences would go to TCU, 3-2. Carly Barrick and Abigail Brayman both scored in the 80’s to receive the points for the Cowgirls.

The Cowgirls are currently on a hot streak, as they have won three meets in a row with two of those coming against ranked opponents. They sit atop the Big 12 standings where they have remained in first place over the course of the season.

Up next, OSU returns home for senior day on March 10, at Totusek Arena.

  

No. 3 Texas A&M Dominates No. 6 Baylor, 14-4

COLLEGE STATION – The third-ranked Texas A&M equestrian team defeated No. 6 Baylor, 14-4, Saturday at the Hildebrand Equine Complex. With the win, the Aggies move to 9-4 on the season, 5-0 at home, while Baylor moves to 4-3.

“Anytime you can come out with that strong of a showing against a strong team who has beaten some top teams is great. This is the momentum that we need,” head coach Tana McKay said. “We have an off week, so we can concentrate on some of the small things. We have a tough meet against another SEC opponent in Georgia. I feel like we are on a good roll. Everything isn’t perfect, but some adjustments we needed to make from last week we saw today, which is a positive. We are in a good position, and I am happy with where they are at right now.”

The Aggies jumped out to an early 3-1 lead after Equitation over Fences as Caroline Dance opened the meet by edging out Gabby Conte, 82-81, for her fourth straight victory of the season. Alex Desiderio was named the Most Outstanding Player (MOP) after earning the highest-scoring ride of the day with an 85, bettering Madison Day’s 83.  Rachael Hake tallied her team-high 10^th win of the season after topping Brittney Mirkov, 82-80.

Texas A&M extended their lead to 7-1 after sweeping Horsemanship, 4-0. The Aggies rattled off three straight points with Ashley Davidson leading the way as she defeated Abbi Demel, 70.5-69. Sarah Orsak followed suit with a 72-60 victory over Charlotte Green before Avery Ellis notched her third-straight MOP by outscoring Clara Johnson, 73.5-66. Alex Albright finished the first half with a 73.5 to beat Elizabeth Forney’s 73.

The Maroon & White continued their dominance in the Hunt Seat arena after taking Equitation on the Flat, 4-1. Rebekah Chenelle scored the first point with a 75-69 victory over Day, followed by Brianna Peddicord knocking off Mirkov, 65-64. Desiderio clinched the win for the Aggies after earning her second point of the day by downing Rachael Davis, 77-69. Hake concluded the event with a 77, bettering Grace Thiel’s 71 to give A&M an 11-2 advantage while being named MOP for her efforts.

Texas A&M closed the meet by scoring three points in Reining. Madison Bohman started the event with a 70.5 to outscore Kaylynn DeBernard’s 69. Ashton Dunkel topped Georgia Smith, 67-66.5, while Kalee McCann ended the day with 70.5-70 triumph over Demel.

The Aggies return to action for their final conference matchup against No. 1 Georgia on Saturday, March 10. The meet is slated to begin at 11 a.m. at the Hildebrand Equine Complex.

No. 2 Auburn Downs No. 9 South Carolina, 12-7

AUBURN, Ala. – The No. 2 Auburn equestrian team extended its winning streak to four Saturday, defeating No. 9 South Carolina, 12-7, at the Auburn University Equestrian Center. The Tigers improved to 7-3 overall and finished the Southeastern Conference regular season with a 4-2 record.

“The team had to keep working all day and they came away with a great win,” head coach Greg Williams said. “I’m very proud of this group. They are extremely talented and working very hard. They are so together as a team and I’m loving where they are right now.”

The Western corps put together a dominate showing for the squad, going 7-2 against the Gamecocks.

Auburn went 4-1 in Horsemanship to kick off the meet. Sophomore Kara Kaufmann opened up the team points with a 75-72.5 win over Quinn Brandt. Redshirt junior Kelsey Jung and freshman Deanna Green each earned their eighth win of the year as Jung topped Madison Thiel, 72-70.5, and Green bested Megan Overberg, 75.5-72. Green, of Pilot Point, Texas, was awarded her fifth Most Outstanding Performer honor of the season for her ride.

Freshman Taylor Searles finished out the event with a 74.5-72 victory over Paige Stopperich.

Auburn edged the Gamecocks in Equitation on the Flat with a 3-2 record. Junior Hayley Iannotti earned her ninth Flat win of 2017-18, besting Lizzie van der Walde, 56-46. Senior Caitlin Creel edged Lauren Fabiano, 66-65, and freshman Taylor St. Jacques remained undefeated in the event with a 67-57 victory over Louisa Brackett.

The Gamecocks closed in on Auburn’s 7-3 intermission lead, besting the Tigers in Equitation Over Fences with a 3-2 edge. St. Jacques rode to an 87-84 win over Lizzie van der Walde and junior Alex Ladove capped the event with 86 points in her victory.

The Reining corps put together another solid performance for the squad to close out the full day, besting the Gamecocks, 3-1. After SC captured the first match up, junior Blair McFarlin rode to a 67-67 tie vs. her opponent. Senior Alexa Rivard gave Auburn its 10th point with her 68.5 points and junior Betsy Brown extended her winning streak to five as she topped Bridgett White, 70.5-69.5. Freshman Terri-June Granger led all student-athletes with 71 points in her win to seal the 12-7 team victory.

The Tigers remain on the Plains, hosting No. 5 SMU next weekend. Auburn and the Mustangs will face off at 11 a.m. CT, March 3, at the Auburn University Equestrian Center.
