APHA World Show July 3, 2022 – Day 10
Today’s APHA World Championship Show schedule was diverse, with classes ranging from In Hand Trail to Horsemanship to Ranch Riding, Ranch Pleasure, and Working Cowhorse.
Anthony Leier showed Better Man to a World Championship win in 2-Year-Old In Hand Trail for owner Laura Poignant, and though Anthony has known success all over the country, he explains this is his first APHA World Show win. It’s even more special because “Milton” was a pasture accident, he says, an unplanned baby that was born in September.
“The owner called me in January when he was four months old to see what we could show him in, and he was the ugliest duckling,” Anthony explains. “APHA had just started offering the Two Year Old In Hand Trail and Longe Line, so I said, ‘In the fall, let’s see how he grows up and how big he gets.’ We decided to take him on in January, and we call him our little underdog because he’s only three months older than most yearlings, so it was neat to be able to show him in this to give him the opportunity to get out there.”
Right before Anthony’s class, Trainer Maddi Edwards grabbed a World Championship in Solid Paint Bred Yearling In Hand Trail with CH Gold N Delicious for owner Christine Heathman. It was also a special win because Maddi had shown the dam, Hot N Delicious, in Trail under saddle, and Trainer Cooper Evans, who Maddi is an assistant for, raised both the dam and the sire, Infinite Power.
“Infinite Power has had quite a few world titles in Trail, too, and our client bred this filly, and she’s been in our program ever since,” Maddi says. “We bred Mom, Dad and Baby, and today, she lived up to her heritage.”
Later in Amateur Western Horsemanship 19 & Over, Jana Leigh Simons was the unanimous World Champion with Only In A Bentley, the same horse she showed to a Reserve Championship in Amateur Showmanship 19 & Over a few days before. The former Multiple World Champion, Jana, is now a busy lawyer at a thriving practice, so she rides most weekends with her sister, Trainer Sara Simons. Though Jana rode reiners after finishing law school, this is the first time she’s had an all-around horse here at APHA World since 2011. “This horse actually belongs to Sara and her boyfriend, and they shared him with me, which was a very nice share,” Jana explains. “It was his first time to do horsemanship and showmanship, and it was a ton of fun.”
