In the first class of the day in the John Justin Arena at the 2022 APHA World Championship Show, Lisa Ligon won a World Championship in Green Trail with Made Best Bet Yet, owned by Ronda Sullivan.
“Grayson is my pet – my absolute favorite,” she says. They bought Grayson last year at the NSBA World Show and she says since then, he’s learned a great deal. “He now does the Horsemanship, Equitation, Showmanship and obviously, the Trail! We do a little bit of Trail every day,” Lisa explains. Plans for Grayson include possibly pulling a buggy, and maybe, says Lisa, they will make a run for the all-around next year.
Then in the Amateur 2-Year-Old Longe Line, Kimberly Hogan and Suddenly Special won their first World Championship, and for Kimberly, this is the first stock horse she’s owned, very recently coming from the Arabian world. “This is all new to us, and we hit it off on the right foot!” says Kimberly. Charlie Closser and Kearstin Miller helped her find “Ella,” and with some help from Trainer Emily White Ream, Kimberly and Ella took the top spot. Being from Michigan, she said the heat was definitely more intense than she’d expected. “We’ve learned an awful lot here, with tidbits from our neighbors,” she says. “We’ve been taking water bottles, freezing them, and putting them in her water bucket so she has chilled water.”
Then Rylee Morgan dominated Junior Western Riding when she rode the World Champion, Sweet Lazy Sensations for Pamela Switzer, the Reserve Champion, Girl Code for Candance Lowry, and the 4th Place winner, Hot Rod Cool Rythum also for Candace Lowry!
Rylee says all four were really good, and her first and second place horses had only shown twice in the Green Western Riding before attempting the Junior. “They’ve both never shown a full line, and they were both a bit green, but they did their job and they were a blast to show!” she explains. “I really like the Western Riding; I worked for Sara Simons for two years, and I always admired her Western Riders and her ability to change leads phenomenally, so I learned from watching and from her in general,” Rylee says. “I think it’s a very hard class and to do well speaks a lot of your horse.”
Finally, Jeffrey Gibbs won the 2-Year-Old Western Pleasure on Best Ingredient for Joyce Conklin and leased by Colt Andrews. “This is the first time I’ve won the 2-Year-Old Western Pleasure,” Jeffrey explains. “I’ve won so many other Western Pleasure classes over the years, and this one has always eluded me – until now!” Best Ingredient has been special for Gibbs, winning titles in longe line, and now, adding a 2-Year-Old title to the list. Jeffrey and Best Ingredient also won the Southern Belle Breeders class.
