Lilly and Chilln Ona Dirt Road won the L2 Youth 13 & Under Horsemanship in the first class of the day in the Performance Arena Monday at the 2023 AQHYA World Championship Show!

Then in a big class of 113 for the L2 Youth 14-18 Horsemanship, riders and their horses competed in splits and then they were narrowed down to 15 to perform a finals pattern. Alexis Potts and her horse, Mouse Trapped, won the Gold Globe! Alexis says her pattern with “Tater” felt really good today. “We’ve been practicing Eq a lot and going through those classes, and we weren’t exactly sure what we would have today for the Horsemanship, so we kind of went with it. He wasn’t exactly where I wanted him to be going into the class, but my dad and Geno (who has been coaching her) said to go with it.”
When asked about Geo Spangola coaching her instead of her dad, T.R., she it definitely keeps the family peace. “When tensions arise, we need an outsider and Geno is perfect for that. He’s helped me so much.”
She says their turnaround has always been a bit of a struggle and they have to take that slowly with Tater. “You can’t rush him, and today I went a little slower than I thought I wanted to, but it was correct and methodical and it paid off!”

At the end of the day, Estelle McParlan and Amarillo By Moonlite were crowned Champions in the L2 Youth Western Riding! Estelle says it was one of their best patterns, but she didn’t think they would win. They’ve been working on Western Riding for some time, with a couple of rough shows recently where they’ve had to school him and get through it. “It paid off here, and it’s really exciting!” says Estelle.
We asked her the strategy regarding Western Riding – do they change leads a lot, or are they selective?
“For Larry, he’s done it for so long, he anticipates,” she says. “We don’t practice too much – we practice setting up for the change and all that, and it works for him.” Congrats to Estelle and Laredo, aka “Larry!”
