Recently, the American Quarter Horse Association relayed some important information about a new requirement for competitors planning to compete at the AQHA Youth World Show. New for 2015, show numbers must be worn at all times when a competitor is working his or her horse on the Oklahoma City Fairgrounds.

The statement reads as follows:

“Numbers are required to be worn at all times when working your horse. An extra schooling number and number for your halter will be given to you when you pick up your entry packets from the show office.”

Since the announcement, a number of questions have come up on behalf of both competitors and trainers.

For example:

  • “If a horse trainer is riding a youth competitor’s horse, will he or she be required to wear a schooling number as well?”
  • “What is a halter number and how will it be attached?”
  • “Is a number required when longing a horse?”
  • “What prompted this new requirement?”
  • “Is this primarily for identification purposes or does it have more to do with horse welfare and rider safety?”

We have recently spoken with a representative of AQHA, and they are currently working on a press release that will answer all of these questions and more. Stay tuned to EquineChronicle.com for additional details as they are made available.
