ApHC Member of the Month- Jean Smith
“In the eyes of a horse crazy little girl, all horses are beautiful; but, after seeing a picture of an Appaloosa, I wanted one. Time passed, I grew up, got married to a submarine sailor, and had two children. When he got out of the Navy in 1967, we came back to Arlington. Within a couple of months, I bought a sorrel mare. I bred her to an Appaloosa in 1968 and had the Appaloosa foal I always wanted, Potacha Foxy Spots. Foxy wasn’t just my horse, he was my buddy.”
“I trained him myself, and, in years to come, we showed in most Western classes, and some English. In 1974, Kenneth and I bought 10 acres in Mansfield, Texas. Here is where Foxy and I started ranch work, learning Cutting and Roping. Endurance and the mounted drill team was next. Foxy could do anything. Some my fondest memories of Foxy are riding six days a week with Bill Shanklin.”
“I joined the Saddle Log Program and Distance Program in 1977. In 2008, I reached my goal of 2000 hours in the Saddle Log Program. My favorite event is endurance riding.”
“In 1985, I bought a yearling filly named “Megabuck.” We went on to be a 1990 ApHC National Finalist in Novice Non-Pro Trail.”
“In 1999, Was Rain Dencer was an ApHC World Qualifier in Hunter In Hand. She is still with me today. In 1989, I volunteered to be the welcoming committee for Dal-Worth Club to help with regional memberships for exhibitors at the World Show. I have been there every year since with the candy corn in bowls on my table. It gives me a lot of pleasure to meet with everyone.”
“I would like to thank my husband, Kenneth, for his patience and understanding for my love of the Appaloosa.”
Thank you, Jean, for all you do for the ApHC and the Appaloosa.
