Lifelong horseman and longtime Paint Horse breeder Floyd Moore of Huntsville, Texas, died April 3 following complications from a long illness. APHA sends its condolences to Floyd’s family, friends and acquaintances.

Floyd Moore built an equine empire in his 6-J Paint Horses, an operation known for its colorful tobiano cow horses with the blood of the renowned mare Delta flowing through their veins. Delta, a 1963 black tobiano mare, won the 1974 National Cutting Horse Association World Open Finals Championship and was the 1973 NCHA reserve world champion cutting horse and leading cutting mare; she was inducted in the NCHA Hall of Fame in 1977 and was part of the APHA Hall of Fame’s inaugural 2012 class. Her son, Delta Flyer, won the 1986 NCHA Super Stakes and was inducted to the APHA Hall of Fame in 2015.

With more than 35 years of breeding under his belt, Floyd has left his mark on APHA, producing more than 1,300 registered Paints. APHA Executive Director Billy Smith spoke with Floyd before his death and was able to deliver some special news to Floyd.

“Before Floyd passed, we were able to let him know that the Hall of Fame Committee had recommended the induction of him and his wife, Maryann, into the 2018 APHA Hall of Fame class; he was very happy,” Billy said. “They will be inducted at the 2019 APHA Convention.”

Floyd and Maryann (pictured together above) were also longtime supporters of the American Paint Horse Foundation; for many years, they donated a yearling raffled off in support of the foundation’s scholarship mission.

In lieu of flowers, the Moore family has requested donations be made to the American Paint Horse Foundation’s Youth Scholarship Fund in Floyd’s memory. To learn more, contact Billy Smith at billy@apha.com or donate online at apha.com/foundation/aphf-donation-form.
