Sometimes having good neighbors can lead to great partnerships. Such was the case when Colten Andrews piloted Hesa Good Ride to win the Premier Paint Sires Three Year Old Limited Horse Limited Rider Western Pleasure. Jeffrey Gibbs started Hesa Good Ride for owner Tracey Hoffman, and when it came time for a rider for the Premier Paint Sires Three Year Old Limited Horse Limited Rider Western Pleasure, Gibbs didn’t have to look very far – Colten Andrews lives just a mile or so away.
“He’s just so naturally talented, we just had to get out of his way,” Gibbs said. “He’s a really cool horse,” added Andrews. “He has so much self carriage and he has a great personality. He stuck with me through the go-round and the finals and was just really consistent throughout.”
Hoffman bought Hesa Good Ride, who is by Hesa Special Hotrod, as a yearling. “We call him Cruz,” she said. “I bought him partly because of his bloodlines, and partly because of the way he moved. But also, I bought him because of all the engagements he was eligible for, including the Premier Paint Sires.”
It was the third year for a Gibbs-trained horse to win the first leg of the series. “I guess you could say we won the hat trick! My wife Jenna won it the first year, and Dustin Eickenhorst, who worked for us, won it last year,” Gibbs said with a laugh. “This year, Dustin wasn’t eligible, so Colten was able to show for us.”
The reserve champion in the Three Year Old Limited Horse Limited Rider Western Pleasure also won the $1,000 Non-Pro Bonus. Courtney Menke showed Good Girl Gone Bad for Robert Menke, earning $4,500 for the reserve award. Additional placings were third, Ima Hugable Impulse, Hannah Lind for Dave Nitz, $3,000; fourth, SV Krymsun N Gold, Theresa Wills for Makenzie Johanningmeier, $2,000; fifth, Fleets Imagination, Melissa Baus, $1,500; sixth, Been There Scene It, Kristin Layher for One Good Cookie LLC, $1,250; seventh, Scenic Open Range, Laura Spell for Kerry House, $1,000; eighth, Shes Required, Jeremy Rhosheisen for Sara Krueger, $750; ninth, Good Time Tease, Nicole St. Clair for John and Peggy St. Clair, $550; and tenth, Extra Options R Good, Gabrielle Marty, $450. Ten percent of each placing listed was awarded to the stallion owner.
The class was judged by Ty Hornick, Kenny Lakins Jr., Judd Paul, and Randy Wilson and featured 24 horses, which showed in two go-rounds and a final. “This was a really nice set of horses,” said Randy Wilson. “The top five were really close, and you had to watch them all the time to sort them out. The exhibitors and trainers should be very proud of this group.”
Non-Pro, Novice Non-Pro Showmanship Winners Named
The Premier Paint Sires series also presented two NSBA $500 Added Showmanship championships during the Ohio Paint Horse Association’s Buckeye Extravaganza.
Lindsay Bixler showed U Cant Stop My Shine (shown at left) to win the Novice Non-Pro Showmanship and a $500 paycheck.
“I raised him,” Bixler said of her five year old gelding by Scenic Rio Krymsun. “We call him Newman. He has quite the personality. I have a two year old child, so I haven’t got to show him much before this year, but we’re going to do the all around classes. We’re really just getting started.”
Two exhibitors showing half siblings tied to win the $500 Added Non-Pro Showmanship. Carla Perri and Only Good Times split the prize money with Alison Umberger and Recess Appointment. Each won $175 with their geldings, both by Appointment Only.
“I just got him last August,” Perri said of her six year old, whom she calls Howard. (They are shown at right in the right side of the photo) “He’s very sweet. He sleeps 70 percent of the time. He did the Hunter Under Saddle previously, but he’s starting to learn the Western events and we’ll be doing the all around. I’m working to qualify for the World Show.” Perri won the tiebreaker, taking home the NSBA plaque.
Alison Umberger competed with her four year old gelding in Ranch Riding and pattern events. (They are pictured at right, on the left side of the photo.)
“I raised him,” she said. “He’s a very sweet horse. I’ve supported the Premier Paint Sires program from the beginning, but I’m really happy that they included the pattern classes, because not every horse will be a killer rail horse. It gives the horses some other events to participate in and win some of the money.”
2016 is the second year the Premier Paint Sires offered Novice Non-Pro and Non-Pro Showmanship, Horsemanship and Hunt Seat Equitation classes. Novice Non-Pro and Non-Pro exhibitors with horses sired by Premier Paint Sires stallions that sold in the program’s auction are eligible to compete, regardless of the horse’s age.
The Buckeye Extravaganza show continued through Sunday at Champions Center in Springfield, Ohio. The show schedule included the Premier Paint Sires All Age Limited Horse Open Rider Hunter Under Saddle, PPS $500 Added NSBA Non-Pro and Novice Non-Pro Horsmanship and Equitation, as well as APHA Western Pleasure, Horsemanship, Hunter Under Saddle and Hunt Seat Equitation classes.
