This afternoon/evening has been jam-packed with Hunter Under Saddle, Western Riding, Western Pleasure, and Equitation classes.
14-year-old Reily Jacobs-Bell rode her 6-year-old, red roan mare, Get Her Vitals, aka “Lucy,” to win Novice Youth Western Pleasure at her first NSBA World Championship Show. Their horse trainer, Randy Wilson, gave the pair some helpful advice before entering the pen this afternoon. “He said to have angle, have hock, and make sure I breathed!”
This was the only class Reily and Lucy will be competing in here at the NSBA World, but they’re looking forward to the upcoming Quarter Horse Congress.
In Youth Western Pleasure, Katie Bussing rode Cool Lookin Moonie to win their first NSBA World Championship title as a pair. Earlier in the day, she won another World Champion title in Novice Youth Western Riding with A Good Cookie.
“I bought Moonie two years ago,” Katie says. “We were fifth at the Youth World this year and fourth last year. Then, we’ve also been third and fourth at the Congress. She just gets better and better as she gets older. I bought her when she was three and she’s five now. Every day she gets better. In terms of movement, she’s very flowy and relaxed.”
Moonie also racked up a 4th place finish in the Open Western Pleasure Maturity and Reserve in the Intermediate Western Pleasure Maturity with trainer Brad Pitts in the saddle. “It was all back to back to back,” he says. “She went in the Open Maturity and came right out and went into the Intermediate Maturity. Then, I left the class and jogged her down to this arena. Katie bumped her face once and went in the Youth Western Pleasure. I don’t know how the mare did it. Most horses would’ve been angry or mad.”
She’s certainly had a busy day, but Moonie isn’t done just yet. She will also compete in the Non-Pro Maturity, Open and Intermediate Maturity, and Junior Western Pleasure before heading on to the Congress this fall.
Over in the Hunter Under Saddle pen, 19-year-old Katie Adams of Ohio rode Treasured Art, aka “Calvin,” to win their first NSBA World Championship title in Novice Youth Hunter Under Saddle. They compete under the guidance of Piper Performance Horses.
“He’s really broke, he’s really fun, and he enjoys his job… and he is gigantic, obviously! He’s 17.3 hands,” Katie says. “I bought him sight unseen and picked him up. I found him in the middle of a field in the middle of nowhere. I actually didn’t plan to show him, at first, but my mare had fractured her coffin bone. He’s been a Reserve Congress Champion and Top 10 at the World Show, so he’s been helping to teach me this year.”
Cody Parrish rode Lexus Made Lady, aka “Iggy,” to a big win in the BCF Limited Open Three-Year-Old Western Pleasure for owners, Matt and Abi Tuiasosopo. “My brother and I actually raised her, and we sold her to these customers of ours,” Cody says. “She has a lot of natural ability and cadence. My biggest thing is just staying out of her way. It’s so easy for her.”
This pretty bay mare is by Machine Made and out of a RL Best of Sudden mare. Most recently, she and Cody won the Premier Quarter Sires class at the Big A, and Abbi has won every non-pro class she’s competed in thus far. This fall, they’re all headed to the Congress.
Finally, Hillary Roberts rode For One Night Only, aka “Sid,” to a win in Amateur Western Pleasure. She and Sid showed yesterday and were the Reserve Championship in the BCF 4-6 Year-Old Western Pleasure. “This was my better ride of the two today,” she says. “I was really pleased with it, because I hadn’t ridden him a lot beforehand.”
Hillary and Sid did quite a bit of winning last year at the Congress and World Show, but this year presented a new challenge: the transition from hackamore to bridle. “It was a lot easier than I anticipated,” she says. “He’s really good in the bridle and has a lot of self-carriage, so it really wasn’t hard to transition from the hackamore.”
Later in the show, this team will compete in the Non-Pro Maturity and numerous other classes before heading on to the Congress. She also plans to show Chrome On My Zipper, aka “Long John,” to defend her Non-Pro Color Horse Trail title from last year as well as competing with her three-year-old Scoot Over.
Other winners today include Keith Miller and Pretty Assets in the BCF Open 3-Year-Old Hunter Under Saddle, Courtney Brockmueller and Give Me The Goods in BCF Non-Pro Two-Year-Old Hunter Under Saddle, Meaghan Whelan and Sleepin in the BCF Two-Year-Old Limited Non-Pro Hunter Under Saddle, Courtney Brockmueller and Boys Move Over in the BCF 4-6 Year-Old Non-Pro Hunter Under Saddle, Rusty Green and For One Night Only in the Open Western Pleasure Maturity, Blair Townsend and KM WeKnowShesHot in Intermediate Open Western Pleasure, Carli Armenta and Cherrie Bomb in BCF Two-Year-Old Intermediate Non Pro and Two-Year-Old Open Non-Pro Western Pleasure, Brittany Morgan and Whats Your Number in Limited Non-Pro 2-Year-Old Western Pleasure, Sharnai Thompson and Rock County Kid in 4-6 Year-Old Non-Pro Western Pleasure, and Abbey Rawlings and A Lazy Holiday in 4-6-Year-Old Non-Pro Intermediate Western Pleasure.
