Houston SPCA Awarded Custody of 200+ Horses in Conroe, Texas

On Wednesday, July 1st, Montgomery County Justice of the Peace Pct. 1 Wayne Mack awarded custody of more than 200 horses rescued from Calico Dairy on League Line Road in Conroe, TX to the Houston SPCA.
The horses were rescued from horrific cruelty. Nearly all of them suffered from a wide range of health problems, including emaciation, abscesses, and open wounds, and deformed feet. The majority appear to have never received hoof care or hands-on contact.
Their road to recovery will be long. Their physical ailments and wounds must be treated. And, they will have to learn to trust the gentleness of a human touch. Today, the Houston SPCA is launching Operation Calico.
The care for the Calico Dairy horses is estimated at more than $2,000 per horse and Houston SPCA President Patricia Mercer believes the cost of caring for the horses through the appeal period and beyond will reach over $500,000.
