Having grown up riding and competing as a youth and amateur exhibitor in APHA and AQHA circles, I’d always been familiar with The Equine Chronicle. Gordon Downey is a longtime family friend and, for many years, I was able to see images of my beloved horses featured in the magazine’s glossy pages. When I began studying Creative Writing and Journalism in college, Gordon suggested writing some articles for the magazine, on a freelance basis.

I still remember where I was when the editor of the magazine, Tom Grabe, called to ask if I would be interested in a full-time job. I was at the barn. It was one week before graduation.

Fast-forward 13 years, and I’ve been blessed to have had the opportunity to take countless photographs, interview thousands of equestrians, and write more articles and stories than I can recall. I’ve traveled to Texas, Florida, California, Ohio, Nevada, Oklahoma, and everywhere in between. I’ve done show coverage, year after year, at the APHA Youth World Show, AQHA Youth World Show, NSBA World Show, All American Quarter Horse Congress, APHA Amateur/Open World Show, AQHA Amateur/Open World Show, Florida Gold/Gulf Coast, Silver Dollar, Breeders Halter Futurity, Championship Show, and so many others.

Looking back, I’d like to think, that in some small way, I’ve helped mold what equine sports journalism looks like on breed circuits today. The goal has always been, and undoubtedly will continue to be, to promote, celebrate, uplift, and inspire the equestrian community by providing superior, timely, and innovative content.
