The American Quarter Horse Association presented Taylor Sheridan with the AQHA Spirit Award Saturday night at the 2019 Lucas Oil AQHA World Championship Show. Sheridan’s work with “Yellowstone” and “The Last Cowboy” has put American Quarter Horses on millions of television screens around the world.
“The AQHA Spirit Award is presented to an individual who represents the western lifestyle and heritage of the American Quarter Horse to an exceptional extent,” said Pete Kyle, AQHA chief show officer. “His passion for the American Quarter Horse led him to a career in acting and directing, and we appreciate the work he is doing to share our western lifestyle with others.”
Among many other acting, directing and writing credentials, Sheridan is the director, writer and producer of the Paramount Network television series “Yellowstone.” The drama, starring Kevin Costner, follows a family’s fight to save their Montana ranch. This year, Sheridan created and produced “The Last Cowboy,” a Paramount television reality series that followed professional reining trainers and their horses as they prepared for and competed at the Run for a Million. Sheridan hosted the event in September in Las Vegas, where 10 riders vied for their share of $1 million. “The Last Cowboy” and The Run for a Million will return in 2020, and “Yellowstone” recently finished filming its third season.
Sheridan is no stranger to the American Quarter Horse scene. The Texan competes in reining, while his wife, Nicole, shows cutting horses. Two horses owned by Sheridan – Walla Walla Starbuck and Always A Specialnite – are entered to show in senior reining by professional Tom Foran.
The Lucas Oil World is the premier event in the equine industry. The show brings together exhibitors, owners, breeders and fans of the American Quarter Horse from around the world for two weeks of exciting competition, educational opportunities and a bountiful trade show.
