BHF Rolls Out Exciting Additions for 2018

Known for their innovative approach to promoting the Halter horse across all breeds, the Breeders Halter Futurity has a host of exciting new additions for their 2018 event.

New Classes

Two brand new classes have been added to the schedule for the September 12-16 futurity that will take place in Des Moines, Iowa. Classes will include Amateur Weanling Geldings and Open Weanling Geldings.

Another new addition are DIY [Do It Yourself] amateur classes for Amateur Weanling Colts and Geldings and Amateur Weanling Fillies. In order to be eligible to participate in these classes, an exhibitor must be an amateur or youth who is personally responsible for the care and preparation of his/her horse. A trainer cannot, in any way, be involved in the preparation of the horse for 90 days prior to the futurity. This provision also covers small acts of preparation, including, but not limited to, banding a mane, hanging a tail, applying hoof black, or adjusting a halter. In order to promote greater transparency and to ensure the integrity of the DIY classes, each exhibitor will be required to sign an affidavit stating that he/she has not received any help from a professional in the preparation of his/her horse. In addition, an exhibitor cannot have won a World Championship in Halter in any equine association and cannot have placed first in any BHF Weanling or Yearling class. An area in the Sponsor Barn will be provided for any DIY exhibitors who wish to stall together and assist each other in the preparation of their horses during the show. The horses that are eligible for the DIY classes may be shown in the BHF Amateur and Open Weanling classes with the same exhibitor at the lead.

Amateur Trailer Giveaways

Gary and Tammy Raak of Twin Cities South Trailers in Pilot Point, Texas have generously donated the use of two horse trailers that will be presented to big winners at the show. The use of a trailer for one year will be awarded to the amateur exhibitor who accumulates the most points during the course of the futurity. Competitors must show in one Amateur Breeders Halter Futurity class in order to qualify. All other classes, such as the regular BHF and BHF color division, will also count toward this High Point award. The trailer will be presented at the conclusion of the BHF amateur classes on Sept. 16th, and exhibitors must be present to win. In addition, a year’s use of a trailer will be awarded to the amateur exhibitor who scores the most points in BHF open classes and BHF color amateur and open classes. This award will be presented at the conclusion of the BHF color classes on Sept. 14th.
