The horse world is increasingly going digital, and APHA’s Farnam Breeders’ Trust Select Sale is following suit in 2016.

APHA has partnered with Professional Horse Services to bring the auction online, making this premier yearling sale more accessible to Paints, owners and prospective buyers across the country.

“Embracing technology is vital to keeping our Paint Horse heritage thriving,” APHA Executive Director Billy Smith said. “Making this prestigious sale more accessible to the larger Paint community can only let the Farnam Stakes program grow and help us tackle a larger mission of connecting Paint people with great horses.”

The sale takes place November 2–7 following a preview period where buyers may view photos, request information, perform pre-purchase veterinary exams and correspond with sellers. By conducting the sale in a virtual environment, consigners won’t incur the cost of transport for their horses to a live sale, resulting in greater ease of participation and more cost efficiency in participation for both buyers and sellers.

Yearlings sold or repurchased (no sales) through the auction become qualified to compete for more than $50,000 in the corresponding Farnam Pleasure Stakes Classes:

  • Farnam 2-Year-Old Western Pleasure—includes a Limited Division
  • Farnam 2-Year-Old Hunter Under Saddle—includes a Limited Division
  • Farnam Non-Pro 3- & 4-Year-Old Western Pleasure
  • Farnam Non-Pro 3- & 4-Year-Old Hunter Under Saddle

All yearlings sold through the Select Sale must be Breeders’ Trust enrolled. All Breeders’ Trust-enrolled Regular Registry yearlings are qualified to participate in both the sale and the subsequent Farnam Pleasure Stakes classes; new for 2016, solid Paint-bred yearlings with two Regular Registry parents are also eligible to participate.

Consign Your Paint

Though the sale venue has changed, the fees remain the same: $500 consignment fee plus $800 stakes fee and an 8% commission of the sale price (both horses sold and repurchased).

The entire $800 stakes fee goes directly into the pot for the 2017 2-Year-Old Farnam Stakes purses, and Farnam sweetens the deal by sponsoring an additional $20,000. Last year’s payout totaled $67,000. In the premier 2-year-old event, Someone Like You and trainer RJ King of Aubrey, Texas, rode away with the win and more than $10,000 of the class’ $31,500 purse.

“It’s awesome to win it,” RJ said. “It’s an awesome program. I think it’s only going to keep getting bigger and better.”

The consignment deadline is September 15; watch apha.com/oawcs for more details. For additional questions regarding Breeders’ Trust or the Select Sale, contact breederstrust@apha.com.

How it Works

Professional Horse Services will host the auction and handle paperwork and transactions.

Sellers enjoy easy online entry, and instruction is available to take the best possible photos and videos. Buyers will have time during a preview period to view all horses and gather additional information. Bidding is done online, with accommodations in place for slow Internet connections, and all horses stay at home. Learn more about the auction process here.

Once the auction ends, Professional Horse Services serves as a liaison between buyers and sellers to ensure horse health and buyer payment.
