The NSBA World Championship Show kicks off today in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and a very special event started the show off on the right hoof. The NSBA Foundation’s Annual Silent Auction is open for business here in Tulsa, and, for the first time ever, those looking to help raise money for the foundation’s charitable programs, and score some incredible items in the process, can bid in person, online, and by smartphone.
We caught up with Foundation Director Lynn Campbell and Auction Chair Carrie Chown as they were busily preparing for today’s crowd of bidders. Over 70 donors have provided incredible items that range from a trip for four to the NFR and a signed University of Florida football helmet to seven nights at the Grand Mayan Los Cabos and Night Stall Watch service at the AQHA World for ten horses.
“The NSBA Foundation runs alongside NSBA, and our focus is on the charitable programs for the good of the cause,” Lynn says. “We have a board of directors who are all volunteers. Susan Knapp is the president and we also have Carrie Chown, Jennifer Hulcher, Wayne Davis, Stephen Stephens, Alyssa Yparrila, Becky Hogan, and Amy Hassinger. The auction is our biggest annual fundraiser. Our goal this year is $50,000.”
From a hand-painted NSBA-themed mailbox with an estimated value of $50 to a trip to the 2016 Country Music Awards complete with show tickets, a three night stay, and airfare for two, there is truly something for everybody among the 71 items being offered.
“It’s had a different flair this year,” Lynn says. “We’re really looking at larger items and experiences. We’re looking for things that can make a significant impact.”
All of the funds raised from the silent auction will go to support the many NSBA Foundation charitable programs including the Animal Welfare Fund, Equestrians with Disabilities, Heroes On Horses, Trainers’ Crisis Fund, and Youth Scholarships. Some of the donors have earmarked their item’s contributions for specific programs. “For example, with the Holly Spagnola spurs and spur straps donated by Powderbook Farm, as part of their contribution, they want the money to go to the Trainers’ Crisis Fund.”
This is Carrie Chown’s first year participating with the NSBA Foundation as a board member and Auction Chair. Lynn believes it’s the outreach and networking providing by the board members that’s invaluable. “It’s really great to see all of the people who want to participate knowing that it’s going to a good cause. That’s what’s really rewarding.”
