2020 Chief Joseph Trail Ride Restrictions and Cautions

Filed under: Club & Show News,Club and Show News |

Dates for the Chief Joseph Trail Ride are August 3 – 7, 2020. This has been confirmed with the U.S. Forest Service. Currently, the USFS is working on FS Road 500, the Lolo Motorway. They have received grant money to repair the motorway and this work will be done during the summer of 2020.

As of December 18, 2019, the USFS has not given ApHC permission for ANY trailers to be on the roads. For this reason, please plan for tent camping on the ride. While this may change as construction moves forward, we won’t know until much closer to the ride. Additional requirements as of today include:

  • Single axle trucks only – no duallys due to the narrow roadway. Total number of vehicles will be restricted.
  • No horse trailers or camp trailers
  • All horses MUST be shod
  • Large elevation changes will be a daily occurrence so horses must be conditioned for significant uphill and downhill riding
  • Elevations on the trail can reach 6,000 feet and nights will be cold

As more information becomes available, it will be posted on the ApHC website and Facebook page.
