For the first time since 1983, the city of Wenatchee played host to an AQHA show, specifically the Washington State Quarter Horse Association’s “No Silver, No Sequins” event. The four-day, four judge show took place April 2-5 in the verdant valley of Central Washington commonly known as the “Valley of the Apples.”
This was WSQHA’s first time holding an event at the Appleatchee facility, a picturesque location flanked by mountains to the south and west. Show Manager Lisa Gardner credits the facility’s staff with going “above and beyond” to prepare specialized footing and irrigation for the arenas, which was especially appreciated by a strong showing of Reining and Ranch Horse Riding competitors.
Keeping in the Easter spirit, WSQHA held random drawings in every class, under each judge, in the form of brightly colored eggs eggs stuffed with $20 bills. By the end of the show, the club handed out just under $8,000!
When competitors weren’t in the show pen, they could be found enjoying fun social events like the Cowboy Easter Service with a free Easter breakfast or taking a relaxing afternoon hike in the surrounding valley. This easygoing atmosphere carried over into riders’ attire and the club’s no banding suggestion for horses, hence the “No Silver, No Sequins” concept.
Judges for the show were Ryan Kail, Cliff Kellmer, Michael Jung, and Robbin Jung.
