The sixth annual Jerry Wells Memorial Scholarship Halter Futurity for yearling Quarter Horses was held on Saturday, May 31, as special World Conformation Horse Association event during the prestigious Oklahoma Quarter Horse Association’s annual Redbud Spectacular Horse Show at the State Fairgrounds Arena in Oklahoma City. Presenting Sponsor was the Equine Chronicle, Tom and Amy Grabe, Ocala, Florida.
If you remember, last year the Futurity was cancelled at the last minute because of the tornado and torrential rains that hit the Fairgrounds on May 31st .
Platinum sponsors for the show were Steve and Kathy Headley, Bloomington, Indiana, with a donation of $10,000.
Any WCHA event requires certified WCHA judges. Judge for the adult portion of the show was Russ Smith. Smith is also a carded AQHA judge. Youth classes were judged by newly carded WCHA judge Jerri Harmon.
After the classes for yearling stallions, geldings and fillies were completed, the first place winner of these classes were returned to the arena to be judged for Best Of Show. A second judge, also a WCHA judge, was randomly selected from the audience to join Smith in selecting the winner. That judge was Jason Smith. Champion and Reserve Champion winners of each class were presented trophies and Jerry Wells memorial medallions. Best of Show winner received a trophy and a check for $1000. These winners had pictures taken with Betty, the owner of the horse, the sponsor for that class, and any friends and family they wished in the picture. Pictures were by K C Montgomery.
The Futurity had 23 horses making 70 entries this year. Total payout was $30,000 in cash and prizes, including the $500, $1500, and $2000 sponsorship monies for each class, $1000 for Best of Show, plus entry fees, minus 10% of each entry fee reserved for the Jerry Wells Memorial Scholarship fund. All prize money was paid out following the completion of the show.

The Jerry Wells Memorial Scholarship Halter Futurity will continue to be an annual event. Watch for it to be bigger and better in 2015. Our goal is to have a venue in which exhibitors can come and show, no matter if they are trainers, non pros or youth, if they have shown all their life or are just getting started.
The Futurity committee wishes to thank OQHA, WCHA and AQHA, our presenting sponsor, The Equine Chronicle, our wonderful class sponsors, and everyone who helped in any way to make this show such a financial and enjoyable success.
Without each and everyone of you, the Futurity would not happen. For more information, updates and pictures from this year and the past years, please go to the website www.jerrywellsmemorialscholarshipfuturity.com.
